Zhejiang now has 11 prefecture level cities, including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing, Jinhua, Quzhou, Zhoushan, Taizhou, and Lishui, with 37 municipal districts, 20 county-level cities, 33 counties (including one autonomous county), 618 towns, 258 townships, and 488 sub-districts.

Zhejiang population

According to the sampling survey of 5 ‰ population change in the province in 2023, the permanent population of the province was 66.27 million at the end of 2023, an increase of 500,000 compared to 65.77 million at the end of 2022.

At the end of 2023, the permanent resident population in the province was 49.19 million in urban areas and 17.08 million in rural areas. The proportion of urban population to the total population (i.e. urbanization rate) is 74.2%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2022.

At the end of 2023, among the permanent resident population in the province, 34.59 million were males, accounting for 52.2% of the total population; 31.68 million were females, accounting for 47.8% of the total population. The gender ratio (male to female ratio for every 100 females) is 109.2.

At the end of 2023, among the permanent residents in the province, the population aged 0-15 was 8.9 million, accounting for 13.4% of the total population, a decrease of 0.4% from the previous year; the population aged 16-59 is 43.12 million, accounting for 65.1% of the total population, a decrease of 0.9% from the previous year; the population aged 60 and above is 14.24 million, accounting for 21.5% of the total population, an increase of 1.3% from the previous year. Among them, the population aged 65 and above is 10.21 million, accounting for 15.4%, an increase of 0.5% from the previous year.

In 2023, the total number of births in the province was 383,000, and deaths 440,000, with a natural increase of negative 57,000 people. The birth rate was 5.80 ‰, the mortality rate was 6.66 ‰, and the natural growth rate was -0.86 ‰. Compared to 2022, the birth rate decreased by 0.48‰, the mortality rate increased by 0.42‰, and the natural growth rate decreased by 0.90‰.
