Overview of Zhejiang

Zhejiang Province is located in the south wing of the Yangtze River Delta on the southeast coast of China, bordering the East China Sea to the east, Fujian to the south, Jiangxi and Anhui to the west, and Shanghai and Jiangsu to the north. The Qiantang River, the largest river in the territory, is also called Zhijiang or Zhejiang because of its twists and turns, hence the name of the province Zhejiang. The provincial capital is in Hangzhou.

Zhejiang's natural scenery and cultural landscapes complement each other. As the host of the 2016 G20 Summit, Hangzhou is blessed with a unique charm integrating historical appeal with modern splendor. With the West Lake of Hangzhou as the center, criss-crossing scenic spots scatter throughout the whole province, including 22 national-level scenic zones, 8 national-level tourist resorts, 11 national-level nature reserves, 30 national garden cities, 13 national wetlands, 44 national forest parks, 5 national urban wetland parks, 7 national geological parks and 7 national marine parks. The province has 9 national historical and cultural cities including Hangzhou, Ningbo, Shaoxing, Quzhou, Jinhua, Linhai, Jiaxing, Huzhou, and Wenzhou, 20 Chinese historical and cultural towns, and 28 Chinese historical and cultural villages. The total number of famous towns and villages ranks the first in the country. Among the five batches of national intangible cultural heritage announced by the State Council, Zhejiang ranked first in the country in each batch, and the total number of entries has now reached 241. The West Lake of Hangzhou, the Zhejiang section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the East Zhejiang Canal are on the list of the World Cultural Heritage, Jianglang Mountain is on the list of World Natural Heritage, Yandang Mountains is on the list of the World Geopark, and Changxing’s "Gold Nail" section is among the first batch of the World Geological Heritage. Zhejiang is famous for its rich tourism resources, with 27 national-level excellent tourist cities, over 800 important spots of geomorphic landscape, over 200 spots of water landscape, over 100 spots of biological landscape, over 100 spots of cultural landscape, and 450 island scenic spots for tourism development. There are 233 high-level scenic spots above 4A rate, among them, the national 5A tourist attractions include the West Lake of Hangzhou, Yandang Mountain of Wenzhou, Putuo Mountain of Zhoushan, Wuzhen Ancient Town of Tongxiang, Xikou-Tengtou of Fenghua, Qiandao Lake, Hengdian World Studio of Dongyang, the South Lake of Jiaxing, the Xixi Wetland of Hangzhou, Lu Xun's Former Residence in Shaoxing, Shenyuan Scenic Area, the Root Palace Buddhist Cultural Tourism Zone of Kaihua, Tiantai Mountain, Shenxianju Scenic Zone, Nanxun Ancient Town, Xitang Ancient Town, Mount Jianglang-Nianbadu, Tianyi Pavilion-Moon Lake Scenic Area, Jinyun Fairyland, Liu Bowen's Hometown, and Taizhou Prefectural City. Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists are attracted to Zhejiang.
