Che Jun meets with Kiribati President Maamau

On the evening of January 8, Provincial Party Secretary Che Jun met with Kiribati President Maamau in Hangzhou.


Those attending this interview included senior Kiribati officials who accompanied Maamau, provincial leaders Yuan Jiajun, Chen Jinbiao, Zhu Congjiu, and Luo Jianhong, chairman of Zhejiang Provincial Committee of Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, and Qian Bo, Chinese ambassador to Fiji.


Che Jun welcomed Maamau and said that on January 6, President Xi Jinping and His Excellency held fruitful talks in Beijing. The two countries also signed a number of bilateral cooperation documents to jointly promote the “Belt and Road” initiative. All these have injected strong impetus into the friendly cooperation between Zhejiang and Kiribati. As a province with a private economy and opening to the outside world, Zhejiang will resolutely implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and actively participate in exchanges and cooperation with Kiribati. Che Jun said that since the resumption of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and Kiribati last September, the relationship between Zhejiang and Kiribati has made positive progress. It is hoped that this visit will strengthen the exchanges of visits between the two sides, promote exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment, culture and tourism, agriculture and fishery, and education and sports, and thus write a new chapter of friendly relationship between Zhejiang and Kiribati.


Maamau expressed thanks for this warm reception and admired the achievements made by Zhejiang in its development. He said that Kiribati ’s resumption of diplomatic relations with China is fully in the interest of the two peoples. In just a few months, both parties have become very good partners and achieved positive results. Currently, Kiribati is implementing a 20-year development plan and thus urgently need to deepen exchanges and cooperation with countries around the world. Zhejiang is one of the most economically developed provinces in China. There are many good experiences and good practices worth learning from. Kiribati is rich in natural resources, and Zhejiang has advantages in capital, technology and market, so the two sides have broad prospects for cooperation. Kiribati is willing to strengthen exchanges with Zhejiang at all levels, carry out in-depth exchanges and cooperation in the fields of the “Belt and Road” initiative, sports, science and technology, etc. and work together with Zhejiang for win-win development.


On the afternoon of the same day, Maamau and his party visited Wanxiang Group and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Company in Hangzhou.
