The Department of Public Security of Zhejiang Province, a component department of Zhejiang Provincial Government, was established on August 21,1949. Its main duties are as follows:

To prevent, stop and investigate criminal activities; to maintain the public order, stopping the actions detrimental to the social public order; to manage traffic, fire control, dangerous goods control and special professions; to conduct household registrations, administration of nationality and exit-entry affairs; to be responsible for the administration of mass rally and demonstrations; to manage and supervise computer information system; to guide and supervise the public order administration in state organs, mass organizations, enterprises, institutions and key construction sites as well as to guide the public order prevention of such mass organizations as the public order committees.

Department of Public Security of Zhejiang Province is a functional department of the Provincial Government in charge of the provincial public order. There are bureaus or sub-bureaus of the public security in every city or county (city-level county or city district area) under the leadership of the same level government and the superior public security organs. There are agency police stations established and administrated by bureaus or sub-bureaus of the public security in every city, county or city district.
