Transportation AIRWAYS: There are 7 civil airports in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, Zhoushan, Yiwu, Taizhou and Quzhou, with 185 domestic and international flight routes. HIGHWAYS: The total length of highways in Zhejiang is 46,935 km, among which 1,475 km are expressways and 2,487 km are First Grade roads. A "4-hour road traffic circle" has been established, connecting the capital city Hangzhou with all the other cities in Zhejiang within 4-hour reach.
RAILWAYS: A railway transportation network, with the capital city, Hangzhou, as its center, has been formed in Zhejiang by railway lines including Shanghai-Hangzhou, Zhejiang-Jiangxi, Xiaoshan-Ningbo, Xuancheng (Anhui)-Hangzhou, Jinhua-Wenzhou, and Jinhua-Qiandaohu (Chun'an), etc. WATER TRANSPORTATION: With 9,893 kilometers of inland waterways, Zhejiang has 5,495 inland harbor berths and 958 seaport berths, among which 71 can accomodate 10 thousand tonnages and above. There are 5 major ports, namely Ningbo, Zhoushan, Wenzhou, Taizhou and Jiaxing. The total handling capacity of seaports in the province reaches 310 million tons.
Communication and Postal Services
In 2005, the business turnover of the postal and other communication services reached RMB 83.5 billion, an increase of 24.8% over the previous year. Postal service reached RMB 3.14 billion, an increase of 8.2%, and that of the telecommunications RMB 80.35 billion, an increase of 25.6%. The urban and rural fixed telephone switching system has a total capacity of 28.702 million sets. The number of fixed linesubscribers in urban and rural areas reached 22.318 million. The urban and rural mobile telephone subscribers reached 26.863 million, with 59.0 sets per hundred people. The number of registered Internet users, including broadband users, reached 6.89 million.
Energy Resources As one of the provinces in China that make adequate use of various energy resources such as water power, thermal power, wind power, tidal power and nuclear power, Zhejiang has built a number of large-scale thermal power plants, such as those in Beilun, Zhenhai, Taizhou, Wenzhou, Jiaxing and Changxing, and a group of medium-sized hydropower stations, such as Xin'an River, Fuchun River, Wuxi River, Jinshui Beach etc. Zhejiang has entered the stage of modernized electric power industry characterized mostly by "big units, large power plants, great grids, super high voltage and high automation".
Education There are 74 institutions of higher learning in the province, including 7 vocational colleges at preparation stage. In 2005, 9,577 postgraduates were enrolled, with 25,637 already on campus and 5,558 graduated, in addition to the 215,400 undergraduates enrolled, 651,300 on campus and 133,100 graduated. Among students who sat for College Entrance Examination, 71.4% were admitted by universities or colleges, a drop of 5.2 % compared with the previous year and the gross college entry rate reached 34%, an increase of 4% over the previous year. Secondary vocational schools enrolled 264,500 students, with 732,800 on campus and 218,800 graduated. In 2005, there was RMB 30 billion spent on scientific and technical activities, a rise of 23.1% over the previous year, accounting for 2.25% of the provincial GDP, a 0.16% rise over the previous year. RMB 14.4 billion was spent on R&D, accounting for 1.08% of the provincial GDP, a rise of 0.09 % over the previous year. RMB 4.47 billion investment on scientific and technological activities was allotted from the local budget with an increase of 30% over that of the previous year. The fund allotted for science and technology accounted for 3.53% of the total local finance expenses in 2006, as compared with the 3.24% of 2004. By the end of 2005, the province had a stock of 3.9 million talents of all levels (including those with above secondary technical school education, or those with or above junior professional titles), an increase of 15.8% over the previous year. The number of talents in every ten thousand population increased from 701 in 2004 to 796 in 2005.
