It is learned from Zhejiang Provincial Office on Aging that the registered number of 100-year-olds and beyond hits a record high of 1,048 and the past four years witnesses an increase of more than 1.09 million elders.

According to a newly released statistical communiqu¨¦ on the aging population and the cause of elders in Zhejiang Province in 2009, the number of 60-year-olds and beyond reached 7.6239 million in our province by the end of 2009, accounting for 16.18% of the total population, as shown in statistics on household population. Compared with 6.5267 million elders at the end of 2005, there was a net increase of 1.0972 million elders, indicative of an apparently larger growth in the aging population.
