It is learned from the Provincial Communication Department that the electronic toll collection (ETC) system will be introduced to highway management in Zhejiang. When the project is completed, highway users can make non-stop payment at tollgates.

The construction of electronic toll collection system on Zhejiang highways is to be completed in three years, with a total investment of 450 million yuan. It will transform and upgrade the tollgates on all highways in Zhejiang completed before the end of January, 2008, the sub-centers of toll collection and the Provincial Networked Payment and Settlement Center, build 540 traffic lanes with ETC (including the 42 lanes in Zhejiang of the Yangtze River Delta ETC Model Project) and the provincial-level operation and management system, service centers for road network users and so on.

It is also learned from the Provincial Communication Department that the application of ETC will greatly shorten the length of time spent waiting for toll collection, reduce fuel consumption and emission, improving the capacity of subways, transportation efficiency, and the overall services.
